Spring Has Sprung!

Hey Folks,

So, spring is in the air. An exceptionally warm February has led to active fish in many of our local waters. Here is a sampling of the catches!

Club President (Jack) with some healthy looking bass from Anderson reservoir. May be another productive year for this fishery!

Club Advisor (Mr. Thiemann) with one of the better catches from the Cal Delta. The fish have gotten smaller since January, but there were a lot of active fish (catching over 20 bass for 2 anglers)

Club Secretary? (Bobby) with a fish from Uvas. Nice to see that this place is producing.

Winter Delta Bass

Hey All,

By now most of you have seen the big girl I caught at the Delta last Saturday (2-6-16). But in case you didn't here she is again:

During the winter time bass fishing everywhere can be extremely slow. This fish was one of two bites for a whole day of fishing. Yet, the winter tends to also produce bigger fish. 

At the Delta in particular, water temp and water color are vitally important. In the mid to late winter bass tend to be most active in areas with warmer and clearer water (clearer is relative, basically anything that is not pure mud!). Below are some key areas:

Note that these areas are dead end sloughs, and areas that are protected from the main river current. These areas will TYPICALLY be warmer and more clear than others. Also, they are protected regions that can be used as spawning grounds in the spring.

The Baits

In the winter, you can't go wrong fishing slow. But there is the potential of a reaction bite as well. Here are the top baits:

Slow Moving Baits

The Jig is good for sparse weeds and rocks. It can be slowly worked on the bottom

Punch Rigs, as seen in this video, are a good alternative to a jig. This is especially true in heavy weed growth. *Note how the hook stands out with pressure. This is because of a snell knot (research this on the web if you want to know more).

The Drop Shot can be effective as well. Yet with the weed growth and structure many anglers use larger line and casting gear to toss out their baits.

Reaction Baits

The reaction baits are vast, but the staple reaction baits that can work when fish are on the chew include:

Jerkbait (great slow moving action)

These are chatterbaits. They are a bladed jig that can work very well

Lipless Crankbaits. These are fast moving, but may trigger an unwilling bass to react and destroy your bait

If you are patient and spend some time on the water, your efforts will pay off. Here are some more DELTA BASS!!! (both caught this winter)

Awesome Redfish Footage

Here is our friend Nick, his brother, and dad slaying the redfish in Florida. Just plain awesome!

 

Late November Bass Fishing - Anderson Reservoir

There is still some water in Anderson and the bass are biting. Went out on Saturday and caught 8 bass from the bank on a Shaky Head in about 3 hours. Fished from 10 AM-1:15 PM and mainly fished from the Dam out to main lake points.

Also my bait of choice for bank fishing has been the Dry Creek Tazer Tube. You can pair this with a 1/4 oz Shaky Head and make a deadly little bait that snaked in and out of the rocks. I like it because it catches fish like a tube, but is near snagless like a Shaky Worm.

Here is one of the fish from the trip. They were all fat in the 1.5 - 3.5 lb class.

Del Valle 9-7-17 (Labor Day)

Hey All,

I know it has been a while, but we have all been hitting the books and getting back in the swing of school. Wanted to share a brief Del Valle report.

Basically the fishing was sub par. Water temp in the low 70s and lots of boats on the water. Targeted LMB, SMB, and Stripers. Total catch for about 4 hours was 3 Stripers and 1 smallmouth. 

The Stripers did boil at times, but brief and sporadic. All fish came on spoons (besides the d-shot smallie).
